Launched on September 3, 1995, Ebay.com has become the worlds largest online marketplace. The site features auctions as well as items for sale with over 7 billion dollars of revenue in 2009. Ebay allows the sale or auction of almost any item except for: guns/ammunition, unexploded ordinance, government documents, sexually explicit material, human body parts, and live animals. Some of the more interesting items sold on ebay are: a revolutionary war fortress, german submarines from ww2, russian fighter jets, a single frosted flake that sold for over $1,000. and a couple from Arkansas sold the rights to name their unborn child.
History
As said in the overview above the history of eBay started back in 1995 by software developer Pierre Omidyar in his own living room. It started as just a side project on Omidyar's site and was originally called AuctionWeb. What started off as just selling collectible items such as broken laser pointers for around 15$ (first item sold on AuctionWeb) soon turned into a huge profitable site and by 1997 was worth $5 million. In the late 90s eBay came up with a list of banned items to sell including human organs, guns, and Nazi memorabilia. By 1998 Omidyar was a billionaire. In 2002 eBay purchased PayPal for users to pay for their items quickly and easily. Today eBay is still going strong but due to the recent economic conditioned it has declined a bit. Other competitors such as Amazon marketplace has also taken a toll on eBay today. (nfoltz)
